The International has started! From the 2nd of August until the 12th, the biggest event of Dota 2 will take place in Seattle. For the next 2 weeks, 18 teams will battle for the trophy and the record breaking prize pool, that holds more that 23 Million Dollars to date.
The 18 participating teams have been divided into two groups, the invited teams and the teams, that had to go through a qualifier system. The 6 teams, that proved their technique and skill during the past tournaments and received a direct invite are OG, Evil Geniuses, Invictus Gaming, Team Liquid, Newbee, and Virtus.Pro. Many viewers will see these 6 at the top of the ladder, especially Team Liquid, Virtus.Pro and OG, the team, who has more titles underneath their belt than any other teams. The 12 teams, that faced adversities in the qualifier stage to make it to The International are HellRaisers, Team Secret, Infamous, Digital Chaos, Team Empire, LGD.Forever Young, LGD Gaming, iG Vitality, Execration, TNC Pro Team, Fnatic and last but not least Cloud9. The favourites from this pool to take the title are the chinese teams LGD Gaming, LGD.Forever Young and Cloud9, many seeing LGD being able to compete with the invited teams.
The 23 Million Dollars aren’t final though, the amount will keep on rising until the finale on the 12th of August. Fans are able to contribute to the prize pool by purchasing an in-game item called “The International Battle Pass”. Offering a new gameplay mode and the reward of cosmetic enhancements of the characters, the battle pass is very popular among fans. Breaking last year’s prize pool record of 20 million, the popularity of The International and Dota 2 keeps on growing.
